Lot No. 104
CHATEAU MONTELENA WINERY

In 1976 Chateau Montelena put California at the forefront of the wine world. That year a who's-who of the French wine and food establishment gathered for a grand tasting at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris. Four white Burgundies were tasted against six California Chardonnays. When the scores were tallied, the French Judges were convinced that the top-ranking white wine was one of their own. In fact, it was Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay, rated above all other wines. The results proved that Chateau Montelena could produce some of the world's finest wines, and that California's wine industry had come of age. Take home six magnum (1.5L) bottles and two double magnum (3.0L) bottles of Chateau Montelena's 2004 Napa Valley Chardonnay:

DELICIOUSLY DALLA VALLE

Enjoy a 3.0L of 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tasting Notes for 2001 Vintage:
With deservedly high expectations for superb depth and longevity, the 2001 vintage promises another stellar release of wines perfect for wine collectors. A number of parallels are immediately evident when comparing the 2001 Dalle Valle wines with those from 1997 to 1995. We enjoyed a long and warm growing season and the weather during flowering and color change (veraison) was beautiful, allowing for uniform ripening during harvest. This produced grapes full of great flavor and substantial tannin development. Yields were relatively low for our Cabernet Sauvignon- about 1.85 tons per acre at the Dalle Valle Vineyards., allowing for ample concentration. The resulting wine is extremely well-structured, dense and very complex. In it's youth, this wine will greatly benefit from aeration prior to consumption- we recommend a double decant the day before and a serving temperature above cellar for optimal enjoyment.

Value: $600

Donor: Dalla Valle Vineyards

Lot No. 17
SASSICAIA

As a student in Pisa during the 1920's, the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of creating a "noble" wine. Like most of Italian aristocracy at the time, his taste in wine ran strongly to fine Bordeaux.

No one had ever considered making a wine crafted along Bordeaux lines on Italian soil, much less in a region not yet established viticulturally.

Sassicaia was the first Italian wine to successfully establish itself abroad, and is almost universally recognized as the father of the new Italian wine family or simply the Super Tuscan Pioneer. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta's planting is now considered the birthplace of Italian Cabernet.
